There are a lot of myths surrounding lone parents and they are often portrayed negatively in the media. We aim to dispel the myths about lone parents and challenge the negative perceptions.

  • There are over 10,000 lone parents in Fife.
  • The average age of a lone parent is 36.
  • Only 2% of lone parents are teenagers.
  • One in every ten lone parents is male.
  • One in four people will experience being a lone parent.
  • On average, a lone parent is alone with their children for 5 years.
  • Parents can be lone parents for a wide range of reasons: bereavement, divorce, separation, a partner in the army etc.
  • Over 85% of lone parents were in a long term relationship or married to the mother/father of their children.
  • 50% of children living in one parent families are poor.
  • Only one in three lone parents receive any maintenance from the child’s other parent.
  • 56% of lone parents are in paid employment.
  • 19% of children living with a lone parent have a long-standing health problem or disability.

Fife Gingerbread produces a bi-monthly newsletter which is available to every member, partnership organisations and the local media.

The newsletter contains articles and information relevant to lone parents and the issues they face. 75% of our readers regularly read all of the newsletter.

The newsletter is available to download on our website and will soon be emailed to e-members.
