A Perfect Storm for Fife Gingerbread

Wednesday, 23 January 2019

It is with regret that we as an organisation are forced to inform everyone about the current situation Fife Gingerbread finds itself in.

We are facing what has been described as a ‘perfect storm’, where many funding streams are ending, are being cut, or are only partially funded to continue. This storm could lead to a loss of jobs and hundreds of families no longer receiving vital support unless funding is secured fast.

Senior managers and board members have been working tirelessly for months to avoid this situation, but unfortunately the required funding to continue operating at the current capacity has so far not been secured. This means Fife Gingerbread may be forced to reduce its service down to a third of current operations.

This reduction will impact many people in Fife, no more than our staff and the families they support. As it stands we may see staffing levels drop from 41 to 14, and as a result of this there would be no more support for up to 253 of the 348 families currently engaging with the organisation.

Rhona Cunningham, CEO of Fife Gingerbread has this message: “Knowing we may not be unable to continue supporting so many families is devastating, particularly as we know there are 72 children within those families that will possibly require social work intervention. If even 10 of those children were to end up in residential care it would cost the local authority a staggering £1.6m per year; so the opportunity is there for Fife Council to fund our work now and save money in the long run.”

“We will of course keep our staff, families, and the public up to date with any developments regarding funding, but I would like to stress that right now we are business as usual, with the needs of the families we support at the forefront of our minds.”
