Greig Institute

Friday, 3 April 2015

In October 2015, Greig Institute re-opened after being vacant for several years, following Fife Council and Fife Voluntary Action working together to refurbish the building. Fife Gingerbread and Citizens Advice and Rights Fife moving in shortly after, with Addaction Fife following suit in March 2016.

To celebrate the re-opening of the Greig Institute, its occupants hosted an Open Brunch on Friday the 8th of April for the general public, with Cllr Kay Morrison cutting the ceremonial ribbon to announce that the building was officially open!

The Open Brunch gave local families and professionals a chance to look round the new building and find out what support services are now on offer at 'the Greig'. There was lots of fun and games, with our very own Wilson teaming up with local children's entertainer Jamie the Jester to keep children and adults entertained with interactive fun.

There was also lots of food and drink for everyone during the Open Brunch, with parents from The Gateway cooking up a storm on the BBQ grill, as well as the vast array of party foods that were available in the Fife Gingerbread gazebo.

Fife Gingerbread would like to thank everyone who came along for the special celebration, and we look forward to many years in the amazing building.

Information on Greig Institute:

For almost 150 years the Greig Institute has stood proudly in the heart of Leven, taking on a number of guises over the decades.

The foundation stone for the building was laid on 18th July, 1872 by Thomas Greig and the Institute was formally opened on 14th January 1874. The building initially housed a reading room, a room for technical education classes, and a library.

Since then the Greig has been a tourist office, a museum, a police post, and had many other uses, but more recently has lay empty. Fife Voluntary Action, in conjunction with Fife Council, decided to refurbish the iconic building and use it as a Third Sector Hub; a place where charities can reside and allow members of the public to access wide ranging support services.
