AGM 2016

Wednesday, 23 November 2016

On Friday 11th November we held our AGM & Annual Event 2016 at Rothes Halls, Glenrothes. The theme this year was 'Dads Matter', drawing inspiration from Fathers Network Scotland's Year of the Dad initiative.

As always, the event was a mix of keynote speakers, videos, audience participation and inspiring stories from parents we have supported.

A photo story reviewing what's been happening in Fife Gingerbread over the last year kicked off the day...

Dr Gary Clapton (pictured right), the keynote speaker for the event, talked about building a 'dad friendly world', and explained that positive father involvement in their children’s learning is associated with better educational, social and emotional outcomes for children. You can read Dr Clapton's research paper 'Where's Dad Too' here.

The Fife Gingerbread Awards are always a highlight of the event, and this year was no different, with inspirational volunteers and parents given special recognition for their hard work and progress over the last year.

Fiona McHardy from Poverty Alliance, whose research into child maintenance in Fife has shaped our Bairns Come First campaign, was the other keynote speaker. Fiona gave a detailed explanation into recent changes to child maintenance and highlighted case studies and findings that helped take an idea to a fully-fledged campaign that has even been mentioned in the UK Parliament.

Families that have had support from Fife Gingerbread always play a big part in our Annual Event. This year parents from The Gateway overcame their fears and spoke about their experiences and journey with the project. In addition, young parents from Fife Teen Parent Project created an audience participation game called 'We Are Family', a play on Family Fortunes where members of the audience were on stage competing against teen parents. The game was a way of delivering statistics to the delegates in a fun and interactive way.

After the game, Charlotte told her inspiring story before Wilson & Gary, aka The Gingey Boys, entertained the audience with a wee song about office life as the only two males in Fife Gingerbread!
